Growing Trend? Empty Nest Adoption

I've been so fortunate to meet incredible families on our journey to Lucy. And one in particular sparked this story I wrote...

Older couples get a second (and third, and fourth) chance at parenting.
Some parents turn their grown kids' rooms into a gym, sewing room, even a home theater. But more and more families are actually turning them into nurseries... Keep Reading

And the Winner is...

In the first-ever Taiwan Lucy caption contest... Papa takes the cake...or, uh lollipop by just one vote! Julie (my little sis), Barbara (a childhood friend) and Pam (my sis-in-law) were tied for second place. As I said in the original post, the winner would be featured—so here we go!Papa was originally called Grandpa but when J first began to talk, he pronounced it 'papa.'

Although they've lived in Northern California for 40+ years, both Papa and Grandma grew up in Massachusetts—which is probably why I like them so much.

After spending time in the Navy, Papa worked for IBM before the PC was even invented.

Papa can make me laugh without saying a word—not many people can do that.

And, if a woman can tell how her husband will love her through the years by witnessing his father's actions... I have a lot to look forward to.

Lucky 13

Once upon a time, a 23-year-old girl packed up her tiny car and drove across country with $700 to her name and a big dream in her heart—Hollywood! In her first few months in La La land, she worked some interesting jobs—answering Mickey Mouse's fan mail, getting things thrown at her by a famous and insane publicist in Beverly Hills, running up and down a mountain with an arm full of sodas for a thirsty TV crew, and answering phones at a self-help show. Thirteen years later, she finds herself writing fan mail to Mickey Mouse, getting things thrown at her by toddlers, running up and down stairs with sippy cups for thirsty kids, and answering questions that only little ones can possibly think up. Same jobs, different bosses.

I have to say all those years later, I can look back in awe at all the life experiences I've been blessed to live. After a wild and crazy decade (ah, the world as a 20-something singleton), life has settled into a different kind of crazy. The amount of life I've lived in the past thirteen years feels like enough to fill four lifetimes.

I think these photos say it all... after all these years, I am still the same person (although it seems much blurrier) but with a less black and white, I-know-how-the-world-works attitude. And instead of that restless girl constantly wondering and dreaming about the future, my wrinkles and I are much more content with living in the now. And that, my friends, is progress.

He Puts the ZZZZZ's in Pizza (again)

Why is it when I put my little man to bed, he fights to no end... but give him a slice of pizza and it's nothing but snoozin'?

Today's Post is Brought to You by the Number 5

5 months have passed since we accepted the referral of our baby girl. To commemorate the event... a guest post! This one is written by Uncle Scott, Daddy's one-and-only brother—seen here with Auntie Pam in Santa Cruz during our visit last weekend.

Hi Lucy,

This is your Uncle Scott and Aunt Pam writing to you for the very first time. We have enjoyed hearing about you from your mom and dad, but I think it's time you came home so we could meet you in person; so could you please hurry it up please!

Your mom does an amazing job keeping everyone informed about you. We read about you every day and we are looking forward to teaching you the art of "how to spoil your niece" in person.

We love you Lucy.

Aunt Pam and Uncle Scott

A little Mac family trivia: Auntie Pam and I were the very best of friends who had no clue that we'd end up marrying brothers and sharing the same last name. Just more proof that anything can happen in life!

YOU Be the Judge!

In Taiwan Lucy's first ever photo caption contest, I asked readers to put words in my little man's mouth. I got so many responses, I can't decide whose is the best! So I'm putting the rest of you to work. Comment below and tell me who you think should win the Best Caption Award!

Jade: Hmmmmm....I feel like takin' candy from a baby!

Papa: Hmmmmmm...will he go for Porcelain or Gold Caps?

Michelle: Hmmmmm... that will soon be mine. ;)

Dad: How many licks does it take?

Megan: Hmmmmm...How can I get that without him knowing it?

Craig, Judy, and Andrew: Hmmm... do you think the Tooth Fairy will give me a
cut of his pay for encouraging him to eat more candy?

Jules: Now is the time he realizes that I may be younger, but I'm bigger.
Yoink!

Karen: Hmmmmm...is the tackle worth getting sticky?

Barbara: Hmmmm... if Tom Brady had one of those maybe they would have won
the Superbowl!

Pam: Hmmm...You're just lucky I don't like lollipops.

Walk This Way, Lucy...

We received a developmental update today that's made us question whether we're adopting a little girl or a monkey. Apparently, Lucy "likes to climb high and scare nannies." That skill should come in handy with two big brothers!

Also, she took her first steps on January 25th and is now totally walking! So she should be running and climbing trees by the time she comes home. Those boys won't know what him 'em.

Some more stuff we heard: She sucks her thumb when she is sleepy... accepts a variety of food (what a concept around here)... and has a "strong personality."

Some of the things she is said to be eating include: Rice soup, noodle, toast, mashed fruit/veg and juice, steamed bun, steamed eggs, cake, pudding. Hopefully her first cake was of the birthday variety.

And lastly, it sounds like she was recently assessed by a specialist to check on her "preemie" development. Well, the doctor's report states: "She develops very well and is ahead of other premature infants in her age. She is smart, independent, brave, and energetic." This is courtesy of her 3-year-old brother—he sure does love to write his sister's name.

Lunar Eclipse

Right out our back window, we had the perfect view of the lunar eclipse tonight. Less perfect, is the camera I have to catch it on.
When I told my almost 4-year-old that the next time it happens, he'll be 6-years old, he got visibly upset and said, "I don't want to be 6-years-old, I want to be three." Me too, little man.
What's truly comforting is knowing that the next time it occurs, our family of five will be together.

Be My Guest...

Sometimes Mama needs a blogging break. So I've started the "guest blogger" series. Here's the very first edition.
(Photo taken this past weekend at Grandma & Papa's)

"I must admit, it's a little unsettling to write publicly like this. Jackie has been teasing me for some time about not writing anything for the blog. But the truth is that while it is therapeutic for her, it's awkward for me.

That being said, here I am. The Dad.

I guess all I really want to say is that I miss my little girl more than words and can't wait to go get her. I know that everyone out there going through their own adoption knows exactly how I feel. I am very grateful for the support the community has shown. Even though I don't write on the blog, I sure do read them. I also want to thank friends and family for their love and support. It has meant
everything to us. Now, if we could just get that phone call..."

-Jeff

If you'd like to be a guest blogger, email me at jmomac@mac.com. You can write about anything—your thoughts...a story...something funny... anything you think Lucy would want to know about while we were waiting for her arrival.

Lucy Was in My Arms...

well, in my dream anyway.

I had a dream last night where I finally got to hold our baby girl. It was one of those where you wake up and are so saddened to discover it wasn't real. She said "Mama."

Ok - back to waiting.

(sigh)

What Does Valentine's Day Mean to You?

Valentine's Day. Have you ever noticed that the more life you live, how different the meaning of the day becomes? When I was single and wondering if Mr. Right would ever walk through the door, Valentines Day seemed to be the most important thing in the world. I thought I must be the only person not giddy with excitement over the day. When Jeff and I were getting serious, I had such expectations of it being earth shattering and unforgettable. (of course it was, honey)

Several years and almost three kids later, Valentines Day has taken on a whole new meaning—the true meaning. It means sitting in a tiny chair at a kid's table encouraging a 3-year-old to finish writing out his valentines. It means racing out of work to squeeze in dinner with my hubby and kids before Jeff has to go to work, only to be forced to order the food take-out and actually eat it in the car in the parking lot because our 2-year-old is too cranky from not having a full nap. It means my husband emailing me from work asking if I'll be his valentine. (the answer is yes)

It means looking at life and knowing that next Valentines Day, I'll have everything I truly love. And that's worth celebrating.

It's Never Too Early to Accessorize

OK, this girl thing just keeps getting cuter and cuter. It's already a pleasant surprise when there's an unexpected delivery on an average day—but when the contents of the box are this darn adorable—it just can't help but put a smile on our faces.
Check out the umbrella, care of Aunti "Juju" & Uncle "My Jim" (aka Julie and Jim), who will be tying the knot this Year of the Rat.
We'll be doing a rain dance when Lucy comes home, just so we can put it to use.
AND, Lucy and I both received birthday presents yesterday. (I'm not officially getting older for several weeks but who doesn't love to start celebrating early?) This mother/daughter bracelet set has to be one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. The photo really doesn't do it justice. Look how tiny Lucy's is! It was the perfect reminder that, although not on our time table, she will be here and the wait will be over. Thanks to Karen, Tony, and their four little monkeys (A, A, R & J). She, along with my sisters, will be getting lots of calls when I try to figure out how to juggle three little ones.

Year of the Rat

A Rat Year is a time of hard work, activity, and renewal. This is a good year to begin a new job, get married, launch a product or make a fresh start. Ventures begun now may not yield fast returns, but opportunities will come for people who are well prepared and resourceful. The best way for you to succeed is to be patient, let things develop slowly, and make the most of every opening you can find.

Happy New Year!

Ventures begun now may not yield fast returns, but opportunities will come for people who are well prepared and resourceful. The best way for you to succeed is to be patient, let things develop slowly, and make the most of every opening you can find.

Happy New Year!

Girls Are...Well, Girlie

Happy Day 3 everyone! What have I noticed?
That not only do I work with some of the coolest Moms (and one of my all-time favorite non-Moms) at Mom Logic, but I'm so fortunate to have their support and friendship, especially through the past few months. Look at the cute things Lucy received for her first birthday!
This adorable dress from Julie... (can't you just see Lucy in it?)

Cool girl books from another Julie...
And this vintage-inspired rabbit from Miss Jill! It reminds me of the Velveteen Rabbit, which I loved to read as a kid.

Thank you, ladies!

I also notice today that I get to do what I love and get paid for it, spend a few hours with fantastic people, and still get lots of time with my boys— I'm very appreciative of that. Got to run— I'm off to vote!

What did you notice today? Comment below and let me know!

Hey, What's THAT?

Day 2 of the lunar experiment— what have I noticed today?
Check out the oversized clothes rack, um I mean dust catcher, oops...ah... oh yeah— treadmill!
WOW - how did THAT get in my room (four years ago)???

As you can probably tell by either reading or looking at the size of my butt, I have not enjoyed the treadmill as much as I could be...or should be.

Tonight, that will change.

Ask me tomorrow if I got on it. Because I figure if I have to answer to blog readers, maybe I'll actually do it!

Seriously, there's a TV right in front of it—what have I been waiting for?

Now I just have to figure out how to turn it on. ;)
